I could barely concentrate on my work and instead spent the next half hour wandering aimlessly around Facebook and texting my friends about our plans for later. My friends, coincidentally, were pre-gaming in their apartment in the East Village. Taking tequila shots seemed, at this moment, like a completely absurd idea. An unknown number rang my phone just then; the food was here. I grabbed my purse and headed for the elevator to meet the delivery boy down in the lobby of the building.

Back at the desk, I sank my teeth into the hot, tasty meat of the burger. I rarely allowed myself such pleasures; I was always so disciplined, not only with my laborious work schedule, but in my life in general. Salads, lean proteins, fruits, etc. I always tried to work off the extra calories at the gym, but there was simply not enough time with the demands of my new boss. There was something strange about Mr. Anderson. He seemed to work a bazillion hours per week and never get tired. How did he do it?

A tall, dark frame appeared in the doorway. Todd Berkman, one of the other junior analysts.

“Hey, you heading out to R Bar later?”

“Maybe, I need to find out what my roommate’s doing. I also have to finish this damn presentation.”

“Dude, don’t even worry about it. No one is here. Anderson is the only one left. You’re not gonna get in trouble for leaving early. It’s not even early. Come on, let’s get out of here,” said Todd.

“I know, I know. I’ll text you later, ok? I’m almost done.”

“Sure, yeah. I’ll see you. I’m gonna meet up with a couple of college buddies. Tell Stephanie and Laura to text us.”

“Sure, sure. See ya at R Bar.”

Stephanie was my roommate. Todd wanted to fuck Stephanie. Hell, Todd wanted to fuck me. He seemed to appreciate my curves, but I didn’t exactly find it flattering. Todd apparently wanted to fuck anybody. He was just like everyone else in NYC. I was sure she’d run into him later, drunk as usual and trying to put the moves on me, or any other girl bored enough to listen to him drunkenly blabber on. Todd was funny, and so were his friends. But they were not my type, whatsoever. I turned my attention back to the presentation. Just as soon as I had done so, I received a text from Todd:

Where the F are you? We’re heading to R Bar in 10.
